Tottenham failed to win once again this season in the Premier League and will head into the first international break with just two points from a possible fifteen. Spurs started the game brightly and if it were not for the heroics from Zion Suzuki. The Japanese international made a flurry of fine saves to keep out Savio on multiple occasions and most notably Archie Gray.
After all the first half pressure, it was the away side that opened the scoring. Andy Robertson failed to clear his lines adequately resulting in the ball falling to John McGinn. The Scottish midfielder fired the ball into the box and his cross was swept further into the centre by Boubacar Kamara and ultimately slotted into the back of the net by Johan Manzambi for his first in a claret and blue shirt.
The second period started pretty slowly with minimal opportunities for both sides. It was Unai Emery’s side who doubled their lead just moments after Mohammed Kudus had a goal disallowed due to Robertson being offside. Nicholas Jackson showed immense strength and composure to score his first league goal of the season.
Ten minutes later and it went from bad to worse for Spurs. They were simply carved open by Aston Villa. McGinn played the ball towards the edge of the box where Emiliano Buendia took one touch before unleashing a beautiful strike into the top left corner. An unbelievable goal that looked set to seal the points for the Villains.
Spurs showed a strong fightback during the last ten minutes but it was too little too late. Conor Gallagher poked home Kudus’ cross to pull one back with four minutes to play and Jan Paul van Hecke headed Robertson’s cross into the far corner in the dying seconds during injury time to soften the blow for the home side. Still, Roberto De Zerbi’s side are winless and slipping further and further into another relegation battle. As for Aston Villa, a first win of the season and potentially a platform to build for this new look side under Emery.
