Atletico’s Alvarez to Arsenal speculation grows: How Havertz holds key to £100m deal

News

Arsenal are currently eyeing a move for Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez.

The Gunners are keen on bringing the Argentine to North London but face a crucial hurdle for any deal to materialise.

They would need to let go of either Viktor Gyokeres or Kai Havertz, both who are widely loved throughout the Arsenal fanbase.

Mikel Arteta’s side has consistently faced criticism every summer on not having a ‘killer’ striker who would be the final piece to the puzzle and catapult Arsenal to this elusive Premier League title which they have failed to win for twenty-two years.

When they signed Gyokeres last summer for around £60m, everyone seemed confident that he would be the striker to change the gunners’ fortunes. Nine months on, and that statement is a common debate between football fans.

Gyokeres managed seven goals in his first twenty-four appearances for the club which worried most of the Arsenal faithful but the next twenty-one games he scored eleven goals.

Placing him behind just four players for goals in the Premier League this season: Erling Haaland, Igor Thiago, Antoine Semenyo and Joao Pedro.

In my opinion, this gives Gyokeres a lot more time in an Arsenal shirt as he’s proven himself relatively early on. With the season still going, he can easily reach twenty goals in all competitions which is an impressive number for a first season in the Premier League.

Kai Havertz, on the other hand, has struggled lately. His injury that he picked up at the start of 2025 kept him sidelined for three months before briefly returning and then facing another huge period out.

He has struggled to play a consistent run of games for some time now and has rarely started in his strongest position which is the striker role. Havertz scored fourteen and assisted seven in his first season which took Arsenal agonisingly close to the league title in 2024.

He then scored fifteen and assisted four in just thirty-six games the following season but unfortunately was halted by the injury in February 2025. You would feel that Havertz may have had his time at Arsenal which would feel ruthless, but you must be ruthless if you are to win titles as a football club.

Alvarez would be a superb fit for Arsenal. He only needs a minor sight of goal, and he will punish his opponents.

Currently on the same goals as Gyokeres this season, you would think thats no improvement but the ability that Alvarez possesses is phenomenal. With Gyokeres, he is viewed more as a poacher.

Someone who will be there at the right moments to poke the ball home whereas Alvarez will create his chances from thin air. His ability to shoot from range and in the box is fantastic. He rarely squanders chances and can trouble the keeper from dead ball situations as we saw against Barcelona in the Champions League this season.

Financially, he will probably cost around £100m which is a huge sum of money to part ways with, but I believe he would be a superb addition to the club.

A player that increases the fear factor within opponents when the play Arsenal, something I believe is withering as the 2025-2026 season goes on.
