UEFA Champions League winners PSG became only the third side to retain the UEFA Super Cup after narrowly beating a brave and resilient Aston Villa side in Salzburg.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring inside the first twenty minutes after firing Desire Doue’s pass viciously into the roof of the net. Marco Bizot seemed to have misjudged where the ball was going and failed to keep it out.
Unai Emery’s side responded well and easily could have found themselves level very quickly. Debutant Brain Madjo had a handful of opportunities but failed to hit the target. Finally, the teenager’s big moment arrived. John McGinn whipped a delicious ball towards the back post where Madjo muscled his way to the ball and poked in Villa’s deserved leveller just on the stroke of half time.
The second period lacked much quality and chances, but it was Doue yet again involved for the telling goal. The Frenchman found himself clean through and slotted the ball clinically past Bizot only for the offside flag to be raised. After a lengthy check, the goal was given and the Ligue 1 champions resumed control.
Villa failed to offer much apart from an Emiliano Buendia header in stoppage time which whistled past the post.
This victory for PSG is their fourth European cup in just two years and their third against a Premier League side.
